Incheon yesterday ...

Jemulpo was the former harbour of Incheon. All traders and travellers to Korea landed here.

It is interesting that Jemulpo ist the place where the first German company was settled in Korea. Karl Andreas Wolter came  together with Robert Seitz on June 6, 1884 from Shanghai to Jemulpo,  to build a branch of the E. Meyer Co. of  Hamburg there. In 1907 it became his own company, and he also opened a branch  in Busan. This company existed until 1915.

André Eckardt, a Benedictine missionary, landed  with five priests and brothers on December 28,  1909 in Jemulpo  to found a missionary station. During his 20- year stay in eastern Asia, most of it being  in Korea, he studied the Korean language, history and literature, and founded in 1950, as a professor at Munich University, the Korean Studies Institute in Germany.

… and today

Incheon is a harbor-city 50 km west of Seoul with about 2.4 million inhabitants. From here ships and ferries sail to China, to southern neighboring countries, and  to islands in the vicinity as well as Cheju-Island. In Incheon many well- known Korean and international factories have been established  for metal and chemical products. Naturally trade and transportation play a very important role. In march 2001 the new international airport was opened, Korea’s main gate to the world.

Sightseeing ...

Popular among tourists is the peninsula "Wolmi-do". Here are located many seafood restaurants  right on the waterfront. From the nearby pier, ferry boats travel to the small islands in the vicinity. In summer this offers a good chance to reach wonderful beaches.

The only „Chinatown“ in Korea is in Incheon. Many colorful shops and restaurants can be found in the center of the city. The next subway is „Incheon Station“.

Today Incheon can best be reached by subway from Seoul. An express-line connects the cities of Seoul and Incheon, with stops only at the main stations.
