Talking about band names is like dancing about architecture.

Steve Wright Show On 8 May 2003, this site was chosen as Website Of The Day in the BBC's Steve Wright Show

Welcome...
to the wonderful world of band names. Over the last years, I collected various explanations of band names.
I found out that a lot of bands tend to take their names from movies and actors, records and songs, books and writers or things that happened to them in their childhood. Other sources are cities and places, famous personalities and myths/religion. This is why I decided to split the names up in several categories. Plus, you will find a list of abbreviations.
N*E*R*D, for example, stands for "Noone Ever Really Dies". Dimmu Borgir is Icelandic for "Black Castle". Portishead were named after a small town next to Bristol, England. And Duran Duran took their name from the villain in the movie "Barbarella".
N*E*R*D   a black castle   Portishead, England   Jane Fonda as Barbarella

If something's missing, then please...
