When Dr. Rolf Grosklaus, the Dr. Strangelove of Nutrition, wants something to be true, he says it over and over again, gets angry with people who do not agree wth him and humiliates or intimidates anyone who gets in his way.

This is an amazing process. Botswana has faced the Chairman down several times and each time, Dr. G. has gotten more and more hostile and agressive. When Botswana insisted on challenging the inclusion of fluoride as a supplement in baby formula, did Dr. G. turn to a citation of the science behind early use of fluoride? (Of course not: there is none.)

Did he ask for an expert consulatation from the WHO or FAO (as he is entitled to do?) Of course not: science is not the issue.

What he did was become hostile, demeaning and downright nasty and then ignored the question raised several times over.

The way it works is that the Chairman makes a decision and, in necessary calls on the EU or the US to back him up. Alternatively, either the US or EU will say what he agrees with and then he will back them up. It's a very small "Old Boy's Club) to be sure.

Woe unto the nation (usually African) which does not accept the pseudoscientific decision of the chairman. Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, Ghana, Zimbabwe and South Africa have all felt his scorn and ire over the last few days when they did not buy into the wording, content or concept that the US, EU and chair were pushing.

At one point, Dr. Mathiadoukis (EU) shouted that he was tired of [Botswana] "wasting my bloody time for nothing" and the chairman joined him in yelling that he, too, was tired of dealing with the topic at hand for the last 8 years. The issue? Nothing worth stuggling over: just the lives of tens of thousands or more African babies whose mothers would be subjected to advertising luring them into using sub-standards packaged foods for their newborns since it, but not natural "family food", would contain nutritional claims which would makethe packaged food high status but nutritionally deficient.

Botswana does not permit baby food or formula claims and wanted the relevant Codex language to allow this. There was a near riot over it. Finally, the Chairman prevailed and literally shouted down the objections yet again. You can imagine that good feeling hardly prevailed.

The response has been excellent: we are working with about 8 countries who are eager for our input and help along with NGOs (non Governmental Organizations). We are building a constituency for change starting with this central issue: establishing the principles of DSHEA as the international standard and reducing hunger and increasing world health through nutrition.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving. We will be spending it thousands of miles from the people we love and who love us. They'll be having a warm gathering of loved ones to eat family food and share family foibles. We'll be having bratwurst and saurkraut.

Let me tell you, this is hard, gruelling work with hours on end (guess which end!) spent sitting and listening to things that send me ping-ponging between mind-numbing boredom, astonished dismay and transfixed horror. Couple this with the need to explain and explain, listen and, in general, engage in endless talk (and not get very much sleep) and you have a less than pleasurable task. And the weather is miserable: cold, wet, grey and nasty.

But that is the job we are here to do and we are very pleased to be doing it, too, since we believe that we can literally change the outcome that would transpire if we were not here.

Watching the EU/US tag team (with a far-from-impartial "judge") is a whole lot of NOT fun!

There are 2 other Health Freedom groups here and they are pursuing their agendas which is, after all, just as it should be. Unlike the Natural Solutions Foundation, though, they do not have a specific, pro-active strategy for neutralizing the danger presented by the Codex Vitamin and Mineral Guideline. We think the difference is significant because solving the problem is even more important than accurately identifying it.
