WB01337_.gif (904 Byte) Books Suiseki are naturally formed stones. Their beauty suggests a scene frome nature or an object of nature. There are some types of traditional Suiseki which suggest a near or distant mountain, an island, a waterfall, a cave-stone, a tunnel-stone, an animal-shape-stone, a human-shape-stone or a picture stone.

About  two thousand years ago the art of Suiseki was born in China. In the sixth century A.D. such stones were brought to Japan and the Japanese adapted this art. Today the art of Suiseki finds the way around the world.

Suiseki are exhibited on carved wooden stands (DAIZA, DAI) or in shallow trays (SUIBAN). A collected stone should be carefully cleaned only, but nothing else. The natural shape, texture, or colour should be enough to enjoy the stone placed in a Dai or Suiban as a Suiseki.
